Young apprentice styles it out to scoop top industry prize

Heart of England Training’s Level 3 Hairdressing Apprentice, Jack Dettmer from PKai Hair, showed that his skills were a cut above the rest by taking gold at the National Wella Xposure 2017 finals.

Xposure is a national competition open to all hairdressing students to discover and nurture the industry’s brightest up-and-coming talent. The competition was launched earlier this year with prospective entrants submitting a photograph of a commercial cut and colour that they created with a detailed description through the competition website.

A series of heats then followed for successful entrants, with a total of 7 Heart of England Training learners making it through to the regional heats, 4 of whom were Heart of England Training apprentices at the award winning PKai Hair group based in Peterborough.

Jack and his colleague Holly, both Heart of England Training Apprentices working at P.Kai made it through to the national final, held at the Wella Professionals World Studio London and were judged by a panel of industry experts including, Bruno Marc, Marc Antoni, Colin McAndrew, Kieron Fowles, Matthew Batham, Patrick Cameron and Rudi Rizzo.

The close fought competition required entrants to create and style their models and talk through their ideas and inspiration to the judges during the timed final. Jack opted to go for a rustic styled theme, taking his inspiration from oxidised copper and modern architecture. His mood board drew on these elements with a strong focus on light reflection and contrasting structures. As part of his prize, Jack will be receiving £1000 towards his Wella My Education fund, £500 worth of kit and Wella Professional products a tailor made mentoring day with leading industry experts and a backstage pass to the prestigious Trend Vision Awards this September at the Roundhouse in London.

Kai Wan, salon owner of P.Kai hair said: “For Jack to win gold is testament to his hard work and dedication, he has beaten over 300 entrants across the UK to take the top prize at Xposure and we are all extremely proud of what he has achieved.”

Speaking about his recent success Jack commented: “I’m thrilled to have won gold at Xposure, when my name was called out for gold I couldn’t believe it! I would definitely recommend entering this competition to other hairdressing apprentices as it’s a fantastic way to build your confidence and recognise talent. I’d like to thank the team both at P.Kai and Heart of England Training for encouraging me to take part and supporting me every step of the way.”

Natalie Healy, Technical Educator for Wella added: “Wella are fully committed to supporting hairdressers of the future via various initiatives such as the Xposure student competition. We were delighted that Heart of England Training entered this year’s competition and it is great to hear of Jack’s outstanding achievement in winning!”
