Sports Coaching Apprenticeship & PE in School Sport Apprenticeship for a brighter future

Let’s be clear.. you CAN leave school at 16 and join one of our courses or apprenticeships.

There are two great sports related apprenticeship opportunities.  The Sports Coaching apprenticeship usually involves working in community settings such as sports clubs, leisure centres, ‘kids clubs’ and local schools. Other more football focused opportunities are also available

The PE in School Sports apprenticeship would be based in the PE department of a local school.  Working alongside the Head of PE and PE Technicians, you would be involved in the design, lead and delivery of a variety of sports sessions to students.  Possible progression could be to higher education or to a teaching assistant role.

Intermediate Apprenticeship
  • Learning while you are an employed coaching or PE apprentice
  • A level 2 NVQ certificate in Activity Leadership, Level 2 and Functional Skills in Maths and English and a technical certificate
  • Programme lasting a minimum of 12 months

You will cover the following mandatory units:

  • Prepare for activity sessions
  • Lead activity sessions
  • Conclude and review activity sessions
  • Support the work of team and organisation
  • Promote health, safety and diversity in active leisure and recreation

Optional units include:

  • Contribute to participants’ personal and social development
  • Support the development of the sport or activity
  • Give customers a positive impression of yourself and your organisation

  • Introduction to semi professional football
  • Coaching contract in the USA
  • 2nd year advanced apprenticeship
  • Teaching assistant
  • Higher education
Advanced Apprenticeship - Sports Development
  • Learning while you are a employed
  • A Level 3 Diploma in Sports Development, A level 3 certificate in Mentoring Sports Coaching Volunteers and Functional Skills Level 2 in Maths and English
  • Programme lasting a minimum of 12 months

You will cover the following mandatory units

  • Manage own resources, performance and professional development
  • Contribute to strategic development in sport and active leisure
  • Provide leadership in sport and active leisure
  • Promote equality and diversity in sport and physical activity
  • Ensure the health, safety, welfare and security of customers and staff

Optional units include:

  • Support the development of sport and physical activity in education
  • Lead and motivate volunteers
  • Manage information for action
  • Contribute to the evaluating, developing and promoting of services

Options and pay

The apprenticeship is usually full time employed with a local employer.

Will I get paid?

Employed apprentices will be paid a minimum rate of £3.50 per hour (often more). Apprenticeship wage accurate as of 1st April 2017.
